PREFACE, THROUGHOUT the following pages I have attempted to describe, in as simple a manner as possible, some of the most striking examples of the mode in which the structure of animals is adapted to their manner of life. The book being intended for the use of the young, scientific terms have been almost wholly discarded, and the few whose employment is absolutely neces- sary are carefully and simply explained. It has also been my endeavour to illustrate the different prin- ciples by reference to familiar examples, and thus to place side by side, as it were, the known and the unknown, the old and the new. In order to impress a fact upon the mind of a child, that fact must be presented in an interesting and attractive manner, and, if I have discharged my task in such a manner as to have supplied a simple introduction which will lead the pupil to higher zoology, my object will have been achieved.
