Description
Cosmos: a sketch of a physical description of the universe.

Bound in cloth with embossed boards and spine, and gilt lettering.

Eventually five volumes of Kosmos were published, being von Humboldt's presentation of the geographical research carried out during his travels to the Americas and Asia (there is a Wikipedia article 'Cosmos (Humboldt book)' ). The vols. I and II offered here were published in German in 1845-47, based on lectures delivered to the University of Berlin in 1827-28; they are Henry G. Bohn's first English edition (translated by E.C.Otte) published in 1848-49. At the back of vol. I there is an extensive catalogue (40pp) of Bohn's books. The only illustration is a steel-engraved frontispiece portrait of the author (protected by a flimsy) in volume I.
