The Compleat Angler, Izaak Walton, illustrated by Arthur Rackham, pub. Harrap 1931 1st thus. 224 pages, 12 full page clour illustrations and b/w vignettes. Quarto, green cloth, just touches of wear to corners and top and bottom of spine which is sun faded by a few degrees. Internally very good, no inscriptions with some pale foxing to verso of half title. A handsome copy of this Rackham title. First published in 1653 the book celebrates the art of fishing. Published at a time of great turbulence in the post Civil War England it can be read as a reaction to the politics, finding solace and harmony in the sport. It draws on other texts in the field of angling and remains one of the great works on the subject capturing the spirit of a certain kind of gentle Englishness that prevails even against a background of political upheaval. |
