Gulliver's Travels or, to give it its full title, 'Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver', was first published in 1726. Its success was immediate and wild and its popularity endures to this day. Firstly, as a satire it's wide ranging in its targets. Governments, social mores, science and morality are all tackled during Gulliver's visits to various fantastical realms; meaning it manages to retain its potency. Secondly, the adventures themselves are genuinely exciting and original. Though Swift sought to mimic and mock the great adventure novels of his day, Gulliver's travels not only fit into that tradition, they push into new, strange places. The image of Gulliver as a giant within a tiny city will be with us forever.

Brock's illustrations within are detailed and dense. The marriage of content, illustrator and binding makes this one of Macmillan's great green cloth bindings. It has the same attention to detail as their other 'Cranford series' publications. With the fetching dark green cloth and all edges in gilt.
