An episodic novel by Elizbeth Gaskell, originally serialised in 1853 Household Words and published in book form in the same year. It gained popularity at the turn of the twentieth century and has since been adapted for stage, radio, and TV. Without a linear plot, the work follows a series of sketches delineating people and customs contemporary to its time, painting a picture of Cranford, a market town governed by etiquette, custom and an intricate network of ladies.

Adorned with the popular illustrations by Hugh Thomson in colour, renowned for decorating many works by important authors, including Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. A new edition with a preface by Anne Thackeray Ritchie.
